David Hislop (a.k.a message board regular RoadRunner): Beat the boredom of erging over the summer months by getting your erg firmly placed in front of a TV with video capability. Regular visitors to the Message Board and Online Training Forum will be aware that my other half, Mrs RR consented to having the erg et al in the conservatory. Well we got back from our Tour Of Wales and she decides she wants to commandeer the conservatory again as a conservatory. I quickly agreed, not wishing to upset the applecart. We moved all the stuff from the conservatory erg, DYNO and weights into the computer room a corridor room in the RR mansion which links our pad to the RR-in-laws' pad.I split the erg and got that moved no problems, then the weights went. Then Mission Impossible moving the DYNO! Try moving that along a corridor and shifting it through a doorway! It had to be taken apart and rebuilt using my best washing machine repair expertise. Success - and nothing left on the floor without a place to go.Got everything positioned in the room. Bearing in mind that the PC is there as well, I had already switched on to e-row mode and the possibilities involved in that. RR Junior also twigged and nearly spilled the beans with Mrs RR. After advising him to keep shtum on that count, we moved the TV through and onto the cabinet in front of the erg sorted. One final thing to sort out was to get the TV fixed up with the infra-red headphones.First problem no jack point for the sender. Not to worry, it still transmits from living room main TV to erg room. I could now erg in relative silence in a cooler room than the conservatory, where on a hot day the temperature has been known to top the 100 mark (warm weather training! Who needs Banyoles?)The final piece of the jigsaw was to test drive the erg early next morning with the mob still in bed to see if it disturbed them. The room is next to RR Juniors Room and across the corridor from our room and just about under RR-in-laws bedroom.Started off at 5.30am and did 90 minutes. The previous night I had set up the TV and headphones to watch Sky News. 9am feedback time although if there had been a problem I would have been lambasted before then. So that was that: a new location, slightly cooler and sound proof, with TV/Video and PC. I just have to remember to shut the doors and open the windows for fresh air.So if you want to beat the boredom, buy a set of headphones, TV and tape whatever you want. It means you can do films, sport, etc and catch up the next day. The TV is great for taking your attention off the monitor whether it be during a long row or during the painful sessions.I haven't erged in the garden yet as the weather has been so unpredictable but no doubt that day will come. I'll have to get a TV and shade on the lawn and make sure it works okay.If you've got an article you'd like to write for the Indoor Rowing News, for criminey's sake get it into [email protected].
